The progression of gear In Runescape isn't as linear like other games of the genre. It doesn't matter if you're playing restrictive building (like an unmodified) or isn't wealthy, or fighting specific enemies will impact the type of equipment you choose to use. But there's still a general progression path in OSRS Gear, and this guide will serve to point you to the right direction. You may also be interested in the RS3 Gear progression guides.

If you're looking for a bargain on equipment, go to our OSRS Items page. Also, you can stock up on some OSRS Gold to buy equipment from the Grand Exchange.

What should I be aware of about OSRS Gear?

As you progress in level and gain experience, more gear becomes accessible based on your combat statistics and quests unlocked. One distinctive feature of RuneScape is the fact that players are able to attain maximum combat statistics using cheap, low-level gear while the experience rate is reduced. You can mix and combine pieces of gear regardless of level, if you aren't able to afford upgrades, particularly through treasure trail drops.

 Melee Gear Progression

Melee is comprised of three skills of Strength, Attack and defense. These abilities can be mastered in any order, but it is important to place the focus on Strength for end-game efficiency. It may take longer to learn the three melee statistics as compared to range and magic, however, it's best for content at the end of games.

Here's a general guideline for how to improve your melee training gear:

 1-20 Str/Att/Def:

 Full iron without shield kite

 Amulet of Strength

Event RPG - (fastest melee weapon with the best DPS until level 20 stats)

 Iron boots

 Combat Bracelet

 20+ Str/Att/Def:

 Full mithril, with shield kite

 Mithril Scimitar

 Amulet of Power or Fury

 Mithril boots

 30+ Str/Att/Def:

Full Adamantite Kite Shield with kite shield

 Adamantite Scimitar

Amulet of the power of strength or fury

 Adamantite Boots

 40+ Str/Att/Def:

Berserker helmet (at level 45 defense)

 Fighter Torso or Rune Platebody

Platelegs of Rune or Fremennik kilt

Brine saber or Granite Hammer (at 50+ attack and strength)

Boots for Running Boots or Climbing Boots

 Rune Defender

 Rune gloves or Regen Bracelet

 Amulet of Strength or Fury

 60+ Str/Att/Def:

All obsidian gear: helmet, legs, chest plate

 Obsidian Sword

 Dragon Defender

 Berserker Necklace

 Imbued Berserkers' Ring

 Barrows Gloves

 Dragon Boots

 Fire Cape

Note: The entire obsidian set may be used until Level 99 if training in the nightmare zone

 75+ Str/Att/Def (End Game):

 Serpentine Helm

 Bandos Chestplate and Tassets

 Avernic Defender or Dragonfire Shield

 Inferno Cape

 Primordial boots

 Amulet of Torture

 Imbued Berserker Ring

Possible weapons include: Ghrazi weapon (stab), Abyssal tentacle (slash), Abyssal bludgeon, or Zamorakian hasta

 Range Gear Progression

The ability to range has easier linear progression as accuracy and max hit rates increase in just one skill. Most high-level equipment will require an initial defense level of at least which can be taught using long-range weapons or melee, which is more effective. A pure attack will be a single defense and gain access to almost all equipment with only a few instances.

Here is a general path for you to improve your training equipment:

 1 Range:

 Cowl body, chaps

 Combat Bracelet

 Iron knives

 Amulet of Fury or Glory

Ranger Boots (if your budget allows it)

 20+ Range:

The Studded Leather Armor body (with the 20-defense) and chaps

 Coif

 Amulet of Fury or Glory

Mithril Gloves (with RFD partially completed)

Frog Leather Boots (with 25 range and defense)

 Mithril knives

 30+ Range:

Maple Shortbow using steel arrows or higher

Fully Snakeskin armor (with 30 defense) includes body, coif chaps, boots and vambraces

 Amulet of Fury or Glory

 40-70 Range:

Chromatic dragonhide armor includes body (with forty defence) chaps, vambraces and body

Rune Crossbow with broad bolts (with 55 slayers) or enchanted bolts

The Ranger Boots, or Snakeskin Boots

 70 Range:

Dragonhide armor in black or blessed Body (with forty defense) chaps, coif, chaps and boots.

Armadyl crossbow that has bolts enchanted

 Armadyl god book

 Rune, Dragon or Barrows Gauntlets

 Ava's accumulation

 75-99 Band (End Game):

Armadyl Armor (with 70 Defense) Body, coif and chaps

The boots of Pegasian (with 75 defence)

 Twisted Buckler (with 75 defense)

 Necklace of Anguish

The Toxic Blowpipe or Twisted Bow - This depends on the type of damage that is required.

 Imbued Archers' Ring

 Barrows gloves

 Ava's assembler

 Magic Gear Progression

Magic is different in the sense that the majority of gear's effects affect the only accuracy rather than the maximum damage. Because of this, players are able to mix defensive gear but not take advantage of the magic bonus with most PvM or PvP settings except when the enemy is very high defense.

Here's a general outline for you to improve your training equipment:

 1 Magic:

 Zamorak robes top and bottom

 Gnome hat

Any elemental personnel required to perform your spells

 Amulet of Magic

 Seers Ring

 20+ Magic:

Xerician robes (with 10 defense) Top: hat, bottom

An ancient book (or Broodoo Shield (with 25 defense)

 40+ Magic:

Mystic Robes: Hat, top, bottom, boots, and gloves

 Mystic basic staves

 Tome of Fire (50 Magic)

 Iban's Staff (50 Magic)

 60+ magic

 Infinity Robes (with 25 defense)

Any God Cape (after completing The Mage Arena)

Mage's Book, Tome of Fire or the Malediction Ward (with 60 defence)

Mystic elemental, Ancient Staff or Slayer's staff

 75+ Magic (End Game):

 Ancestral Armor (with 65 defense)

Arcane Spirit Shield (with 75 defense and 70 prayer)

 Any Imbued God Cape

 Occult necklace

 Imbued Seers Ring

 Tormented bracelet

 Eternal Boots (with 75 defence)

Weapons include: Mystic Smoke Staff, Kodai Wand, Staff of the Dead or a Toxic Trident

 Void Knight Equipment

Void knight gear is believed to be gear for the end of the game, but it's not. It's just a matter of circumstantial. It's used to switch between range, magic, and melee depending on which hood you wear. This can also be an affordable alternative to expensive equipment, particularly for ironmen who are unable to obtain rare drops with lower-level gear.

The minimum requirements required for Void Knight gear is 42 attack strength, defense, range, magic, and 22 prayer. There is a hood for every combat style, which includes melee (10 percent damage) as well as the rage (10 percent to damages) and magic (45 percent accuracy). Upgrading to Elite void gives prayer bonus and an additional 2.5 percent increase in damage from range and magic.

 Wrap-up

If you're going to fight for the highest level, or you are looking to unlock content of a high level the OSRS Gear guide will serve you well as you progress. Be aware that slayers who train may require special gear, such as the Slayer Helmet (I) in order to work towards a higher level. Other than that, these gears should be adequate to be used for training or PvM.
