5 Exercises to Help Prepare for Knee Replacement Surgery from Dr. Vivek Tiwari's blog

If you are considering knee replacement surgery, it is important to prepare your body for the procedure in order to achieve the best possible outcome. While the surgery itself is a major step towards improving your quality of life, the recovery process can be challenging and requires a certain level of physical strength and flexibility. As a knee replacement surgeon in Bhopal, I often recommend specific exercises to my patients to help them prepare for their surgery. Here are five exercises that can help you prepare for knee replacement surgery.

1) Quad Sets

Quad sets are a simple yet effective exercise that can help strengthen your quadriceps muscles. These muscles are crucial for knee stability and function, and strengthening them before surgery can help speed up your recovery. To perform quad sets, sit on a chair with your legs extended in front of you. Tighten your thigh muscles and press the back of your knee down onto the chair. Hold for 5-10 seconds and release. Repeat 10-15 times.

2) Straight Leg Raises

Another exercise to strengthen your quadriceps muscles is straight leg raises. Lie on your back with one leg straight and the other bent at the knee. Slowly lift your straight leg off the ground, keeping your knee straight. Hold for 5-10 seconds and then lower your leg back down. Repeat 10-15 times on each leg.

3) Heel Slides

Heel slides are a great exercise to improve your knee flexibility before surgery. Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly bend your knee and slide your heel towards your buttocks. Hold for a few seconds and then straighten your leg back out. Repeat 10-15 times on each leg.

4) Hamstring Curls

Strong hamstrings are important for knee stability and can help with post-surgery recovery. To perform hamstring curls, stand behind a chair and hold onto it for support. Slowly bend your knee and bring your heel towards your buttocks. Hold for a few seconds and then lower your leg back down. Repeat 10-15 times on each leg.

5) Ankle Pumps

Ankle pumps are a simple exercise that can help improve blood flow and prevent blood clots after surgery. Lie on your back with your legs straight. Slowly point your toes towards your head and then away from it. Repeat this motion for a few minutes, several times a day.
